3/4/2002 - The Special Olympics comes to Big Bear
Big Bear Mountain Resort (Bear Mountain) is proud to host the 2002 Special Olympics Winter Games. The Winter Games will take place March 4-6, 2002 and will culminate the SpecialOlympics Southern California winter sports season.
The opening ceremony will be held on March 4 at 6:30 p.m. It will include a fireworks display, fire dancers, torchlight parade, snowcat parade and an introduction of Special Olympic competing divisions, which are based on Southern California cities that the athletes represent. The introductions will conclude with the lighting of the Olympic Torch and the beginning of the games.
The 2002 Winter Games will be a multi-sport event, featuring Alpine Skiing and Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Snowboarding. The Games will involve over 300 athletes and coaches from throughout Southern California. The skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe and cross country competitions will beheld on the slopes of Bear Mountain. Bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded to the victors at the finish of each event. The annual Most Inspirational Athlete and Spirit of WinterGames awards will be presented during the Closing Ceremony.
