MTV STAR, SKATEBOARDING ICON DYRDEK OPENS ‘NEW SAFE SPOT SKATE SPOT’ LOCATION IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD
GRAND OPENING OF WILD GRINDERS THEMED SKATE PARK AND
7-ELEVEN® STORE TO PAY HOMAGE TO SKATEBOARDING
NORTH HOLLYWOOD (May 14, 2010) – Skateboarder Rob Dyrdek, star of MTV’s Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, 7-Eleven® stores, and Los Angeles, District 4 Councilmember Tom LaBonge have partnered with street skateboarding’s biggest stars to celebrate the grand opening of a state-of-the-art Skate Plaza at North Hollywood Park.
The theme of the Skate Plaza includes Rob Dyrdek’s authentic street skateboarding cartoon and Wild Grinders toy line. As a nod to 7-Eleven’s popularity among North Hollywood skateboarders, the 11340 Magnolia Blvd N. Hollywood, CA 90601 store across from the new Skate Plaza has been transformed into an urban skate store. The eye-popping design of the store’s exterior will features larger-than-life Wild Grinders graphics that carry into the store, where exclusive Wild Grinders merchandise will be sold among 7-Eleven’s other popular product offerings. Dyrdek also has designed a Wild Grinders-themed Slurpee cup that will be sold exclusively in 7-Eleven stores nationwide this fall.
“Partnering with an artist to help his vision of recreating a store come to life is something that has never been done,” said Stephanie Hoppe, 7-Eleven Senior Director of Marketing. “We are taking this relationship a step further to help provide kids with a safe place to street skate.”
The Rob Dyrdek Safe Spot Skate Spot in North Hollywood will officially open at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 18. Dyrdek and friends will officially open the Skate Plaza by giving the park a test drive with skateboarding demonstrations. Visitors will have an opportunity to score free exclusive 7-Eleven Wild Grinders giveaways like cups, T-shirts, key chains and more.
A $250,000 donation from 7-Eleven to the Rob Dyrdek Foundation helped Dyrdek realize his vision for this skate park. The 7-Eleven donation funded the design and assisted in construction. Councilmember LaBonge and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks worked together to secure an additional $200,000 in funds to complete construction and landscaping improvements for the new public facility. The result is a 15,000-square-foot skate park that is expected to be known as one of the nation’s premier public skating venues.
Dyrdek created the idea for the Safe Spot Skate Spot Program, which offers safe havens for kids nationwide to skate. This program is funded by the Rob Dyrdek Foundation. This is the third Skate Plaza opened by Dyrdek. The first opened at the Lafayette Park Skate Plaza, and second is located in Hollenbeck Park. Dyrdek plans to continue building more Safe Spot Skate Spot locations in Los Angeles.
