“On any given day, you could see Mr. Peanut holding hands with Dracula…”

1. Backyard

My apartment is tiny, but having a private outdoor area makes city living tolerable. I spend a lot of time back here. Rain or shine BBQs. I’m usually building stuff, growing veggies for the bugs to eat, shooting at lurkers in the vacant back lot with a bb gun, or sometimes just laying around in a hammock with a book.

2. New York Muffins

?
The Coffee isn’t all that and neither is the food for that matter, but this is usually the spot to meet up in the morning before skating. It’s a block from the train and ground zero for some of the best hipster watching on the planet. On any given day, you could see Mr. Peanut holding hands with Dracula or a guy in boat shoes with a cape and a parrot on his shoulder. I love it.

3. Bahn Mi

I usually eat at home because I like to cook, but when I’m on the run or only have a couple bucks, a Vietnamese sandwich from Bahn Mi is the way to go. Cheap and simple. The best fast food in the city.

4. Woodshop

My backyard doubles as a woodshop. I enjoy working with wood and building things. Sometimes I just do it for fun, and sometimes I work on projects I have going with Steve Nardone, skateboarder, all around go getter and C.E.O. of Tribeca Set and Design. You can see some past and present projects of ours at tribecasetanddesign.com.

5. North Brooklyn Compost Project

I recently got involved in this. It’s a 100% volunteer local compost site. Just volunteer one shift per season and you can drop off your compostables twice a week. No more stinky trash under the sink, and you can help cut down on the amount of garbage out there. Plus free soil. All right.

6. Not the Dog Park

Dog parks are the worst. They’re full of overprotective sensitive dog owners who are too lazy to really walk their dogs and just want to be seen by other stuck up dog owners. Plus they are filthy and will eventually make your dog sick. I start and finish every day skating with my dog. Tonka and I keeps it real.

7. The Water

I’m a country boy at heart. Usually, I can’t go more than a week straight in the city without needing to escape. Fishing is a good way to keep grounded. New York has some great rivers and streams, but to get some good lake action I go up to Maine. In Maine you can’t throw a rock without hitting a lake.

8. Bike Trails

Contrary to popular belief, the hipster didn’t invent the track bike. The train sucks and cabs are expensive, so the best way to get around the city is by bike. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to go on a bike ride to Long Island with the guys from Chari Bike Shop as well as John Igei and John Cardiel. Awesome!
