This week, in response to last week, I’ve included a bunch of photos you may or may not have seen from around the world. Taken from various trips over the years, hopefully they’ll spark some travel inspiration. Enjoy.
Kenny Anderson - Nosepick. This was shot in the Canary Islands on Tenerife, the less visited of the main islands. We went there on a short flight from Barcelona in March 2008 and skated both Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Danny Montoya - frontside noseslide. Tenerife Island again. This is an old fort that is a tourist attraction during the day but has a few good spots at night or on off days.
Guy Mariano - Switch crooks. This is one of the better known spots on Gran Canaria. We took a ferry over from Tenerife for a couple days to visit the main island. There is an amazing assortment of things to skate in a small area there.
Jerry Hsu - Backsmith. This was the cover of Skateboarder in 2004. Shot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this was one of the first trips I produced myself. The crew was Jerry, Rob Pluhowski, Anthony Pappalardo, Van Wastell, Danny Garcia, and Diego Bucchieri. I remember being super concerned about everyone getting along but it worked out well.
Kerry Getz - Frontside flip. Mexico City, circa 2006. I went on several trips to Mexico that year and this was from a Habitat tour. Freddy was going crazy and I remember being super sketched out by the cops. Kerry was super pissed off about this trick taking too long but he stuck with it for the photo. Thanks Kerry!
Al Davis - Ollie. Another Habitat trip, this was in Cambodia in 2009. We were in Thailand and decided to get adventurous and go to Vietnam by bus. That took us through Cambodia which was probably one of the craziest places any of us had been at that point. There wasn't much to skate in Phnom Penh (the capital) but we did find this old roller rink. A huge crowd gathered to watch and these naked glue huffing kids were running around our ankles. They were probably trying to rob us but nothing was taken. You can see the kid's bag of glue in his hand.
Jack Sabback - back lip. Ulaanbaatar, Monglolia 2007. This is taken from our epic Trans Siberian Railway trip where we went from Moscow to Beijing and then Shenzhen, China over the course of two months. Ulaanbaatar is surprisingly good to skate but we had three cameras stolen there and rocks thrown at us by local kids. A common sight is missing manhole covers in the middle of the street. People are so poor they steal them and sell them to scrap yards.
Chris Pfanner - nosegrind. This was from a Vans trip to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. This plaza is amazing to skate and Chris did about ten tricks there. The place is divided in half by Greece and Turkey who both claim ownership. We went to the Turkish side as well but didn't find any spots.
Chris Pfanner - Ollie. The same plaza in Cyprus.
Kenny Anderson - ollie up - back tail. We skated this barge in Rotterdam Holland for several days in a row. This was particularly difficult because the boat kept moving, making the inch wide rail pretty tough to aim for. Kenny nailed it nevertheless. The owner used to work for the local skate distributor and had his crew use the crane to move logs around for us to make spots with. An amazing experience to say the least.
Clark Hassler - Ollie. From Astana, Kazakhstan in 2009. We took at 27 hour train to get to this remote city in the middle of Central Asia. Hardly anyone lives there and there are spots everywhere. This was one of the best cities to skate I've seen. Expensive as hell though. Security was pretty slack but they are not the kind you want to get in a bad situation with. The place definitely has this sketchy Russian feel at times. Our friend Kirill was detained for several hours by police but finally let go.
Kenny Reed - Noseslide. Astana, Kazakhstan. One of the longest noseslides ever done!
Kenny Reed - Kickflip. From Hong Kong circa 2002. This was my first trip out of the country ever. Talk about culture shock. The city is so crowded in places that you could never hope to skate except at 6am. Kenny and I got up around 5:00 and shot this on top of a subway station before the morning rush hour.
Jerry Hsu and Spanky. Istanbul, Turkey 2010.
