Pool Party S.J. Style
by Ray Stevens II
This all started when I got an email from Brenden Simmons saying he was gonna have a "Bacon and Beer Breakfast Bash" for his 30th. The party was to start at 8 am, with the Shitkickers playing at 10 and my band, Clay Wheels, to play at noon. The people living at the house gave us the thumbs up to drain and skate their backyard pool. Calls were made and a pump was borrowed from Steve Caballero, so the mission to drain the cement vein was on! It took about three full days to empty this beast as the first storm of the year was hitting us hard.
As in almost any situation, there were some doubters about our mission, but much like the thick, green-pesto pool scum, we had to move them to the side and proceed with reckless abandon. As the transition was revealing itself to us, it was looking ultra tight and very "whippy." When we finally emptied it the day before the party, a fun three-man session was enjoyed by Tony "Farmboy" Farmer, Jonny "Modoc" Manak and myself. This pool is easily one of the gnarliest, weirdest pools I have ever skated. It is about ten feet deep with a two-foot extension on the face wall. It also had some obstacles thoughtfully installed by the Sunset pool company that came in the shape of a love seat in one corner, a deep end deathbox and a three-tiered love seat that goes over vert, making for a natural "concrete wave." There was also a workable shallow end with a deathbox.
Emails and calls were sent to get the word out about the session. Top dogs responded as Royce Nelson, Pete "The Ox" Colpits, Farmer, Joel Chavez, East Bay Sean, Davoud "Concussion," Dave Nelson, Steve Caballero and more showed up to rip. Others showed up to get ripped and did so in fine BMC fashion. Ricky Windsor, J.J. Rogers and Sam Cunningham rolled down from Sacramento. Mook, Smiling Dennis, Todd Prince and more from skateboarding's glorious past all presented themselves to party. The hijinx that these guys were up to were equally as honorable as what was going on in the cement pond.
