Who: Skate Park Association of the USA (SPAUSA) is a pro-active non profit organization that helps communities build skate parks. SPA has more than 10,000 members including skate parks, skateboarders, bmx riders, and other industry partners. One of its skate ramps is housed at the Venice Center for Peace with Justice and the Arts (VCPJA) which the community center offers non-profit support, and encouragement for programs that nurture, guide, and provide safety for youth, while promoting non-violence and conflict transformation.
Boost Mobile RockCorps (BMRC), the national youth volunteerism movement that has engaged more than 30,000 volunteers to get involved and help their communities has recently returned to Los Angeles. From May 10 through June 20, BMRC will partner with more than 20 Los Angeles area non-profit organizations for volunteer projects designed to extensively improve areas in the Southern California region. Combining the power of music, community and volunteerism, Boost Mobile RockCorps will offer entrance to the summer’s hottest concert – the only way to earn tickets is by contributing four hours of volunteer service.
What: On Wednesday, June 18, BMRC will partner with SPAUSA for a volunteer event to repair the skate ramp at the Venice Center for Peace with Justice and the Arts. SPA had a skate ramp donated to them by the X Games. However, it has been in disrepair for several years, with only a portion currently being used. BMRC youth volunteers will rehabilitate this Skate Park by adding greenery and murals, painting the exterior of the VCPJA building and making improvements to the sanctuary area.
Along side youth volunteers, celebrities and professional skateboarders will also roll up their sleeves, including professional Skateboarder Terry Kennedy. Skateboarding for less than seven years, Terry has stared on MTV’s ‘Viva La Bam,’ and was handpicked by hip hop icon Pharrell to serve as the captain of skate team/footwear brand, Ice Cream shoes.
